Super write-up. Great to get a “man on the street” perspective on this race. I love the bit about sneaking in to the pits – I’ve pulled that kind of a trick a few times. Maybe next time, you’ll have a jalopnik press badge and someone will actually cover the price of a grandstand ticket!

I’ve always thought the Mercedes R350 was quite appealing – an early hint at what would become the CLS styling, it’s sleek and absolutely huge inside, with options for captain’s chairs or 3-seat bench in the second row, and a generously sized third row for an extra two kids. It works as a daily driver and long-haul tourer, though the gas mileage isn’t as good as what you can get from most late-model minivans these days, especially with the AMG model. Bluetec improves those numbers though. Is the R350 a minivan? Maybe. But it’s a Mercedes first.

I don’t need every jeep to be some ‘roided out off-road moster, but if it’s not I don’t want them pretending it is by showing us clips of it fording 8″ streams. Also, I think it’s a huge mistake to slap a badge on some fiat and call it a jeep – it’s just cheapening the brand not to at least have it be truly jeep engineered. I fully expect significant disappointment when this thing starts being reviewed. I’ll try to keep an open mind though, and if it truly is an entry level soft roader worthy of the jeep …read more
